چکیده مقاله
This study analyzes data from a panel of 50 countries to examine the evolving dominance of the digital economy relative to the oil economy. The analysis highlights five major economies—United States, China, Germany, Japan, and South Korea—whose combined digital economy reached approximately $31 trillion in 2022, accounting for about 58% of their aggregate GDP and rising 11 percentage points since 2016. The digital sector grew at 7.6% year-over-year, outpacing overall GDP growth by 5.4 percentage points over the same period. The findings also reveal substantial cross-country heterogeneity linked to underlying economic structures: for example, Qatar scored 65.05 on the Arab Digital Economy Index (ADI) 2022, ranking third among Arab nations, while Algeria scored 46.55, ranking 12th, an 18.5-point gap underscoring the role of non-resource factors such as policy, infrastructure, and human capital in digital advancement.
A remarkable driver identified is electronic commerce: business e-commerce sales surged by nearly 60% between 2016 and 2022, reaching about $27 trillion across 43 countries and representing roughly three-quarters of global GDP within that sample. This surge coincides with substantial investments in digital infrastructure, notably 5G networks, which are expected to boost broadband speeds by up to 100× and reduce energy consumption by as much as 90%, with implications for productivity, business models, and energy efficiency. The study also demonstrates that digital transformation facilitates the integration of economic and ecological systems, promoting industrial transformation, with a stronger compound effect in regions exhibiting higher digital maturity.
